Welcome to the Youth Services Unit
Upon taking office in December of 2010, Sheriff Scott Jones identified the need to combat youth and gang violence in the Sacramento region, and he made this his top priority. Sheriff Jones appealed to the United States Department of Justice COPS Office with a very specific grant request for a program that was unlike any other that existed in the country. Specifically, Sheriff Jones had a vision to combat youth and gang violence with a regional, three-pronged approach - intelligence, enforcement, and outreach.
With the assistance and support of our Congressional and Senatorial leaders, as well as the support of Director Barney Melekian, the COPS office responded and awarded us the highest grant award in the country, which enabled us to hire 25 officers specifically dedicated to accomplishing the Sheriff's vision. Utilizing our grant resources, and in partnership with several local, state, and federal agencies, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department developed the IMPACT Division - a regional approach to combating youth and gang violence.
